flag Afghanistan Afghanistan: Trade Profile

Foreign Trade in Figures

After the collapse of the Taliban government in 2001, Afghanistan has opened up to international trade. Afghanistan has very few commercial barriers for imported products. However, the infrastructures are in bad condition, a legal and commercial framework is still being developed, and an unstable security situation are still the real trade barriers.

Since 2010, the IMF and Afghanistan have been trying to establish economic policies to achieve a positive trade balance. The structure of imports will mainly be based on high capital goods which will be linked to the development of the extractive industries during the next decades (a copper project in Aynak and iron in Hajigak). The infrastructures financed by the sponsors will also support the imports. The potential of an increase in traditional Afghan export products, such as dried fruits and carpets, is limited. However, a trade development with Central Asia and Iran could relaunch the Afghan exports in these sectors.

At the present time, the main export trade partners of Afghanistan are India, Pakistan, the United States, the Netherlands and Tajikistan. The country imports most of its products from Pakistan, the United States, Germany and India.
